Ostomy Care; Helpful Hints for Easier Ostomy Care Eat
a well-balanced diet on a regular schedule, with fresh vegetables,
fruits & 6 to 8 glasses of fluids daily. To avoid air/gas; eat &
chew slowly in a relaxed manner, avoid chewing gum, smoking, and
straws. Eating yogurt or drinking buttermilk may help reduce gas as does
not eating after 8 pm. Avoid odor producing foods; fish, onions,
garlic, broccoli, asparagus & cabbage. Write
the date you apply a pouch on the adhesive tape as a reminder of last
changed date. The best time to change a pouch is in the morning, before
eating or drinking anything. Empty pouch when 1/3 full (of urine, stool,
and/or gas). If fuller than this, it will be more difficult. When rinsing pouch, put some odor eliminating drops in rinse water to help lubricate & freshen. Spray inside pouch with non-stick cooking oil, it may help reduce stool sticking & allow easier emptying. Protection & care are key. Use barrier ointments, shower patches, pectin powders, ostomy belts, etc.
